Introduction
The IKHLAS Drop-in Centre is a safe space
created by PT Foundation for the drug user, sex worker, and transsexual
communities of Chow Kit area in Kuala Lumpur. Each of these communities runs
their own programmes here.
For example, the drug user community, most of
who live off the street, seek refuge at IKHLAS in the day time, whereby
nutritional meals are provided at very low price, basic first aid facilities
operated by a qualified nurse are available free-of-charge, shower and
resting facilities are also available.
HIV/AIDS workshops and outreach work regularly
take place. Most importantly, it is at IKHLAS that many drug users feel
loved and cared for, and feel empowered to make something of their lives,
including reducing their exposure to HIV infection.
The IKHLAS Drop-in Centre is
run by 5 staff members and a team of volunteers. IKHLAS depends entirely on
private funds to operate.
