THE LIVELY rhythm of Rasa Sayang and other folk songs
reverberated through Rumah Solehah in Bandar Tun Razak as the children, most
of them HIV positive, sang and swayed along to the tunes performed by
Malaysian Idol finalists.
Six of the contest's 11 finalists were equally excited about the special
visit. Some held the toddlers tightly in their arms, while others played
musical instruments enthusiastically.
Also helping to cheer the children up were main sponsor TMNet's BlueHippo
mascot and employees.
One of the finalists, Farah, said she wished the organiser had informed her
about the visit earlier so that she could bring some gifts for the children.
“I was told about the visit only yesterday, otherwise I would have baked
some cookies,” said the longhaired girl who was dressed casually in a pink
Baju Kurung.
“It makes me happy seeing the children chuckling away.
“They enjoy attention and I hope there will be more activities like this
where we can bring joy to the less fortune. Anyway, at least I know where
they are now so I can pay them a visit whenever I want to,” she said.
Daniel, who brought along his own guitar, was kept busy playing the songs
requested by several energetic boys.
“This is an eye-opening experience for me,” he said.
Nita said she enjoyed herself very much because she always liked children.
“They are angels to me, they can make me feel calm and peaceful,” she
enthused.
The three other finalists present were Ash, Faizull and Adam.
Caretaker Wan Hava, 56, said the home was set up seven years ago to provide
refuge for HIV carriers.
Currently, there are eight adults and 20 children residing at the home,
which occupies two double-storey terrace units.
It is partially funded by Malaysian Aids Council and Health Ministry but
needs public donations to support running expenses.
