TAIPING: The transmission of HIV via sex in Perak has shown an upward trend
lately, and this is a cause for concern, said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohd
Tajol Rosli Ghazali.
“Transmission via sexual contacts jumped from 11.2% in 1994 to 26.8% last
year.
“A total of 13 expectant mothers were detected to be HIV-positive last year,
the highest number since HIV screening was introduced in Perak in 1998,” he
added.
He said this in his speech read out at the launching of an anti-AIDS youth
camp in conjunction with World AIDS Day at the Mangrove Forest Reserve in
Matang here yesterday. The speech was delivered by state exco member Datuk
Ho Cheng Wang.
Overall, Tajol Rosli said intravenous drug users continued to form the bulk
of the 5,205 HIV/AIDS cases detected in Perak since 1988.
From the 5,205 cases, 940 had died, he added.
He said HIV-screening was carried out at drug rehabilitation centres and
detention centres on foreign nationals and blood donors.
Nationwide, he said 64,439 HIV-positive cases were detected up to last year
and 9,442 of them developed into AIDS cases.
“Out of the 9,442 cases, 846 were women and 152 children below the age of 12
years,” he said, adding that 7,613 of them had died.
