"Man with AIDS pours blood over boy"

The Star (www.thestar.com.my) (04/12/05)

HONG KONG: A three-year-old boy was taken hostage by an AIDS-infected drug addict in southern China who poured blood over his face and into his mouth and ears, a news report said yesterday.

The toddler was grabbed by the addict, 32, who tested positive for HIV in July when police tried to arrest him for frightening neighbours into giving him money for drugs, the South China Morning Post reported.

The drug addict held the boy for three hours in a standoff with police in Shenzhen, using a knife to cut himself and spill blood onto the child.

The boy was rushed to hospital where he was found to have several small wounds and will now undergo HIV tests to see if he has contracted the virus.

The addict had been terrorising neighbours into giving him money after discovering he was HIV positive and grabbed the boy after he was reported to police for extortion. — dpa
