ONE man slept with several women during a one-night orgy. Another slept with
a man on five different occasions. Three more – two of them undergraduates –
led an active sex life, sleeping with different men over a period of three
years.
All donated blood last year and all were asked about their sexual history
before their blood was taken. And all, who are now infected with the HIV
virus, lied.
Their donations were destroyed.
On Wednesday, they were jailed after they admitted making a false
declaration on the questionnaires when they donated blood.
In sentencing them to jail, District Judge Jasbendar Kaur noted that they
were “extremely remorseful”, adding that there was no doubt that they “bore
no malice” when they went to donate blood.
“Your decision to donate blood is commendable, but there is a need for all
blood donors to be responsible. All of you chose to give information which
you knew was not true,” she told them.
With the exception of undergraduate Wong Shimin, each faced a charge of
making a false declaration.
Wong, 22, was jailed 10 months for lying on two occasions when he donated
blood at Pasir Laba Camp, first on May 29, 2003, and then again on June 3
last year.
The other four – Suhaidi Abas, 37; Tan Yee Wee, 30; Ng Choon Siong, 21; and
Lua Bu Chung, 37 – were each jailed eight months.
Lua had an orgy with several women on Aug 8, 2003.
Wong, Ng and Tan had sex with different men for at least three years.
