Standard Chartered Bank has renewed its annual sponsorship of two homes
which shelter and care for mothers and children with HIV/AIDS.
The sponsorship for RM36,000 each, in conjunction with the World AIDS Day
2005 celebration recently, went to Rumah Solehah and Rumah WAKE.
The funds will go toward paying for monthly rentals and provisions for both
homes.
The bank’s chief executive officer Shayne Nelson said it had long
incorporated “Living With HIV/AIDS” as part of its induction programme for
newcomers.
The bank also has an e-learning programme on HIV/AIDS for its staff
“All 2,000 Standard Chartered staff from 31 branches across Malaysia have
been trained on Living With HIV/AIDS.
“As an organisation, we practice what we preach. There is no room for
discrimination or prejudice at th workplace for Standard Chartered staff in
dealing with HIV/AIDS,” said Nelson.
The bank’s e-learning programme covers the bank’s policy on HIV/AIDS, facts
and fiction about the disease, testing and infections, HIV and The Workplace
and on Safe Sex and Abstinence.
“Employees need to pass an assessment at the end of the programme where they
require an 80% passing rate,” said Nelson.
“The bank has also trained a team of 60 HIV Champions for Living With
HIV/AIDS outreach efforts.”
Since 2002, Standard Chartered has expanded its Living With HIV/AIDS
programme to enhance understanding of the virus, the symptoms and ways to
reduce the stigma attached to HIV/AIDS.
