JOHOR BARU: The implementation of the needle
exchange and condom distribution programme to check the spread of HIV among
drug users should not be delayed, the Johor State Assembly was told
yesterday.
Datuk Dr Haris Salleh (BN - Sungai Abong) said the problem was very serious,
adding that any delay would only worsen the situation.
He said about 6,000 new cases were detected every year and 30 people died of
AIDS daily.
“Some 14,000 children have become orphans because of AIDS, and this
statistic is set to rise,” he said when debating the motion of thanks on the
Royal Address.
“I urge my fellow assemblymen, the state and the people to support this
programme to save our future generations.”
The needle exchange and condom programme of the Health Ministry will begin
in January. A pilot project is expected to start at the end of October.
