THE Ministry of Health is investigating
allegations that counsellors at Action for AIDS (AFA) may have had sex with
people who sought their help.
It is also trying to verify if any of the counsellors could have passed the
HIV virus to members of the public, Senior Minister of State for Health Dr
Balaji Sadasivan said on Thursday.
However, an upset Roger Winder, AFA's programme director, said the
allegations “are downright baseless”.
Dr Balaji had said his source of information was an article in the Sunday
edition of The New Paper.
“Apparently, counsellors at Action for AIDS had sexual relations with those
who approached the organisation for counselling.
“And apparently, some of the counsellors were HIV positive,” he said.
The AFA, meanwhile, is refuting The New Paper allegations on its website.
For example, it rejects the claim that, recently, many of the AFA volunteers
were young, good-looking gay men below 30, and that 99% of the volunteers
were gay men.
The AFA said only 15 of the 65 volunteers are men in their 20s. —The Straits
