"AIDS EDUCATION: It’s
wrong to isolate HIV people"

ON
June 12, a television station did a survey for its prime-time news program-
me on whether HIV-positive persons should be quarantined. Nearly 90 per cent
agreed they should be. Such a stand indicates the failure of the
authorities to educate the populace about AIDS.
We
are trying to get the high-risk groups to volunteer for HIV testing. A law
to quarantine those tested positive would drive the number of HIV-positive
persons underground and create a silent epidemic. Would quarantine be easy?
Would the state be able to incarcerate brides and bridegrooms-to-be on the
eve of their weddings? Think about that. Those polled that Sunday lacked the
knowledge to fully understand how ill-inform- ed their choice was.
