THE Perak Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) will be targeting women in
its fight against HIV and AIDS.
Perak MRCS HIV Committee chairman Dr S. Elangovan said there was growing
concern with the increasing number of women infected with HIV.
He said this at the launching of the state-level MRCS World First Aid Day
celebration in Ipoh.
The number of women infected with HIV had been on the rise, he said.
In 1990, only 1.5% of those infected with HIV were women but this number had
gone up to 11% by 2004, he said.
Dr Elangovan noted that women now made up 13% of those suffering from AIDS
“About 20% of those infected with HIV are heterosexuals.
“This is an increase from 2% in 1986.”
He added that about 30% of those suffering from AIDS now were heterosexuals.
