New programme with Global Fund financing launched in
Yunnan
SEVENTEEN counties, cities and districts in south-west China's Yunnan
Province will benefit by a new AIDS control programme with financial support
from the Global Fund.
Zhang Chang'an, director of the Yunnan Provincial AIDS Control Work
Committee, said the two-year programme was designed to curb the spread of
HIV/AIDS among mainline drug consumers and commercial sex workers, and
reduce the negative impact of the killer disease by introducing
comprehensive preventive measures.
They include methadone substitution, syringe swapping, behaviour change via
publicity and peer education, usage of condoms, regular, standardised
service to patients with sexually transmitted diseases, as well as automatic
consulting and testing.
The programme involves a budget of US$5.79mil (RM21.83mil), including
US$1.31mil (RM4.94mil) worth of supportive funds provided by the Chinese
partners.
The Global Fund, which began operations in January 2002, was created to
dramatically increase resources for fighting AIDS, TB and malaria, three of
the world's most devastating diseases, and to direct those resources to
areas of the greatest need.
Meanwhile, the vice-chairman of the China Health Law Society, Wu Chongqi,
said on Tuesday China should accelerate legislation concerning AIDS, at the
ongoing 22nd Congress on the Law of the World.
“Legislation is key to the prevention and cure of AIDS in China,” he told a
panel session. — People's Daily/China Daily
