THE Young Malaysian Movement national HIV/ AIDS awareness programme ended
successfully with a total of 300,000 condoms distributed throughout the
campaign period.
Seberang Jaya assemblyman Arif Shah Omar Shah, who commended the organisers,
said the six-month campaign had reached out to the youngsters.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the campaign, Arif Shah said the event
had helped disseminate information about the dangers of unprotected sexual
relations.
“Songs and performances held during the roadshow attracted the attention of
young people.
“And during the campaign, there were messages on the dangers of drug abuse
and unsafe sex,” he said when closing the event at the Megamal Pinang in
Prai recently.
Twenty nationwide roadshows were conducted throughout the campaign period
that started in December last year.
Arif Shah urged relevant government agencies like Pemadam and National
Anti-Drugs Agency to increase their activities involving youth so that such
campaign could be more effective.
He also said that the corporate sector should emulate ING Insurance as the
main sponsor of this campaign, and step forward to join the fight against
drug abuse and unsafe sex, which have been closely associated with HIV/AIDS
cases in this country.
“The statistics is scary. Since AIDS was first identified 25 years ago, 25
million people worldwide have died of it and 40 million more were certified
HIV-positive,” Arif Shah said.
According to recent findings by the Young Malaysian Movement (YMM), the
country ran-ked fifth behind China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand in
AIDS-infection growth in the Asia Pacific region.
Visitors to the roadshows were given information kit and complimentary
packet of condoms. The other co-sponsors of the event were Nulatex, Great
Vision and Moon Design Studio.
