"Daylight robbers armed with ‘HIV
syringe’"

WHEN did refuelling your car become so hazardous? At around 5pm last Friday,
my boyfriend drove to a petrol kiosk in Johor Baru.
I was waiting in the car while he went to pay for the petrol. I noticed a
strange looking man from afar. I didn’t give much thought to it as he was
some distance away. My boyfriend paid and walked back to the car.
He got in and was just about to close the door when the strange man blocked
the door with his arm. He spoke quietly, obviously trying not to draw
attention. His accomplice then appeared.
The first man was holding a syringe. He told us that the two of them were
AIDS patients.
He grumbled about their troubles and said if we did not give him any money,
he would jab my boyfriend with the infected syringe. It was a hard threat to
ignore, but we only had a few Singapore dollars and ringgit left.
The man with the syringe got pretty mad and ranted about how the disease was
eating away at him. They bargained with us and finally settled on S$20 along
with our ringgit notes. He didn’t want any of our Malaysian coins.
Drug addicts like them have wrecked the safety of the neighbourhood. How can
anybody go about his or her daily routine without fear of being mugged?
It is our country, our home. Shouldn’t we be out and about without fear? I
hope more people would take note of this incident and avoid any situations
where they can be threatened like this.
It would be great if some changes could be made in the way we treat and
rehabilitate our drug addicts too before they resort to more desperate means
of extorting money from people who are just trying to make a decent living.
Both the drug addicts were deeply tanned and shabbily dressed, and looked
like they haven’t had a bath for weeks. They were in their mid-30s, one
skinny and the other slightly plump.
