TOUGHER punishment is in store for those who deliberately spread infectious
diseases especially HIV/AIDS.
Health Ministry parliamentary secretary Datuk Lee Kah Choon told Dr Junaidy
Abd Wahab (BN – Batu Pahat) that the ministry was upgrading and reviewing
current laws such as the Infectious Disease Act to prevent people from
deliberately spreading diseases.
He said six strategies had been outlined until 2010
to tackle the HIV/AIDS problem, especially in reducing
the vulnerability of children
and women.
Lee said various measures especially education, awareness, HIV screening
tests for pregnant mothers and soon-to-be-married couples and counselling
sessions had been adopted.
“We have also implemented the Harm Reduction programme to prevent HIV
infection through contaminated syringes among drug addicts,” he said.
“The anti-retroviral treatment will also be expanded, and we are targeting
5,000 HIV patients by the end of this year.”
