IT is the Government's priority to ensure that HIV/AIDS patients receive the
required treatment at a low cost, said Deputy Health Minister Datuk Dr Abdul
Latiff Ahmad.
In 2004, the Government spent about RM30mil to purchase anti-retroviral (ARV)
drugs from India for HIV patients.
"HIV/AIDS is still a threat to the community, and prevention and control
need to be strengthened.
"Some 3,800 people with HIV/AIDS have received highly active anti-retroviral
therapy in government hospitals, which covers 95% of the 4,000 patients
which we targeted to treat by the end of last year," he said in reply to
Wong Nai Chee (BN - Kota Melaka).
He said the Government provided subsidies by giving two of the three ARV
drugs for free, including for infected pregnant mothers, children and those
who contracted the disease through blood transfusion.
