ME And You (MAY) Support Group for HIV-infected persons and their family
members needs a proper centre in Seberang Prai to better serve the
increasing number of people seeking their help on the mainland.
The group, formed under the auspices of the Penang Family Planning
Association (FPA), is presently lending support to more than 200 people.
Many of them are referrals from government hospitals and drug rehabilitation
centres on the mainland.
“We have cases from Penang, Kedah and Perlis. There are about 10 MAY
volunteers plus three Penang FPA staff members who attend to these people
through house visits, specially organised activities or when they come to
the FPA clinics and centres on Penang island,” said FPA manager Engie Ng.
She said the MAY Support Group catered mostly to mainland cases because
there were already several voluntary organisations catering to HIV-infected
people and their families on Penang island.
She said many cases on the mainland were from poor background and were in
urgent need of any voluntary support they could get.
“We want to set up a day care centre in Seberang Prai to better serve them
but we need RM120,000 for the purpose,” Ng said, adding that it would be
known as the MAY CARE Centre.
CARE is the abbreviation for ‘Continuum of (health) Activities, Referral and
Education’.
Ng said the group hoped to establish the centre in mid-2007.
Those who wish to help can call FPA Penang (04-2825191/ email : fpapg@streamyx.com).
