HIV/AIDS should be made the country’s number one enemy just like drug
addiction, state Housing, Local Government and Traffic Management Committee
chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan said.
He said the high number of HIV/AIDS cases in the country was worrying.
“When the country’s first AIDS case was detected in 1986, there were only
three HIV carriers.
“Since then until June this year, Malaysia has recorded 8,703 AIDS deaths
with 11,413 AIDS cases and 73,427 HIV cases reported.
“Last year alone, there were 984 AIDS deaths, with 1,221 AIDS cases and
6,120 HIV carriers,” he said when opening the state-level World AIDS Day
2006 celebrations at Tesco Penang recently.
Dr Teng congratulated Community AIDS Service Penang (CASP) for organising
awareness campaigns.
“Now CASP is treating and and caring for HIV/AIDS patients at its shelter
called Rumah CASP in Jalan Thomas, Gelugor.
“This is a very positive move and the public should come forward to support
them through donations and services.
“Those with expertise in nursing and counselling should render their
services,” he said.
Also present was CASP chairman P.R. Selvarajan.
