"Group: It’s a crime to pass on HIV to others"

The Star (www.thestar.com.my) (01/07/06)

PETALING JAYA: Prosecuting HIV positive people who donate blood is not discriminatory, Persatuan Pengasih Malaysia president Mohd Yunus Pathi said.

“It is a crime to pass on the HIV to others. People with HIV cannot donate their blood even to others who already have the HIV,” he said yesterday.

He said he had checked with doctors and they have advised against HIV-positive people donating blood.

“So if you really care for others, do not donate your blood if you are HIV positive,” he said.

He added that there were active drug users who were desperate enough to sell their blood for money.

“These people are what I categorise as desperate drug users. They go to a private clinic and sell their blood for as much as RM300,” he said, adding that the problem, which had been around for a long time, also lay with doctors who did not screen blood first.

As for Muslim couples who would have to be tested for HIV before getting married, Mohd Yunus said: “If the addicts come clean and somewhere along the way they fall in love, we will talk to the other party and his or her parents.

“Only if the other party is aware of the real situation, and that he or she agrees, will we meet with the religious leaders for advise on their intended marriage,” he said.
