THERE is an increase in the number of tertiary students infected with HIV
due to casual sex, said Health Minister Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek.
Nanyang Siang Pau quoted Dr Chua as saying that many youngsters thought the
chances of them contracting the disease through one-night stands were very
slim and thus, did not use protection.
Dr Chua said 73,000 people had contracted the disease currently, with an
average of 19 people infected with HIV daily in Malaysia.
China Press quoted Wanita MCA chief Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen as saying that women
should insist their husbands use condoms if they suspected their husbands
had other partners.
She said this was to prevent them from contracting HIV from unfaithful
husbands.
The daily also reported that a 25-year-old businessman from Batu Pahat
proposed to his girlfriend with 999 pink roses, arranged in the shape of a
giant heart.
The girl, who works in Singapore, received the bouquet at her office on
Sunday and accepted his proposal. It took his florist seven hours to create
the giant heart. The roses cost RM2,000.
Sin Chew Daily reported that six graduates who obtained their Bachelor in
Education from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris and Univesiti Sains
Malaysia one-and-a-half years ago were still waiting for their postings.
One of them said they had made several calls to the Education Ministry, even
volunteering to be posted to Sabah or Sarawak.
“We are also willing to go to primary schools if there are no vacancies in
secondary schools,” said the graduate who is now a temporary primary school
teacher.
The six, who approached Sin Chew, said they hoped the ministry would look
into their plight.
