KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has urged the
corporate sector to take up HIV/AIDS issue as the leading cause in their
social responsibility agenda.
“Besides the vital role of contributing to the much needed funds of the
Malaysian AIDS Foundation, implementation of workplace programmes will help
increase awareness of HIV/AIDS among employees,” he said the Red Ribbon Gala
Charity Dinner.
Present were Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.
Najib said that from only three HIV-positive cases in 1986, it is estimated
now that more than 70,000 Malaysians have been infected, resulting in 8,000
deaths and many more widowed or orphaned.
While much has been said about the role of individuals, governments and NGOs
in fighting HIV/AIDS, the role of companies needed more emphasis, he said.
Dr Siti Hasmah later awarded the Dr Siti Hasmah Award 2006 to staff nurse
Jubaidah Bee Nagoor Pitchay from Penang General Hospital for her
contribution and long-term commitment to HIV/AIDS work among patients.
Seven media representatives were also recognised with the DaimlerChrysler
Red Ribbon Media Awards for articles educating the public on HIV/AIDS.
