STOP AIDS; Keep Your Promise' is the theme of an AIDS Awareness Week
organised by the Asian Institute of Medicine, Science & Technology (AIMST)
medical students (11th batch) together with the university’s Counselling and
Advisory Services Unit (CASU).
The ongoing five-day event, launched by the university’s vice-chancellor
Datuk Dr V.G. Kumar Das, is being held until Friday at its temporary campus
in Bandar Amanjaya, Sungai Petani.
The activities include a blood donation drive, an exhibition, talks, a
slogan writing competition and movie screenings on AIDS awareness.
During a slide presentation, the audience was given the stark statistics
from the Health Ministry on the total number of HIV/AIDS cases and related
deaths reported in the country from 1986 to June this year which totalled
more than 80,000 people.
There was also a poetry recital and sketch by the students, bringing the
message that people could no longer ignore the problem and had to take
action to stop AIDS from spreading.
Dr Kumar Das, in commending the students and staff for their effort, said
that knowledge and education was important given that the transmission of
HIV/AIDS among heterosexuals was the highest compared with other risk
factors.
Counsellor R. Ramadasen, who heads CASU, said students and staff of the
university were involved in various community projects and this was the
second time that an AIDS Awareness Week was organised by them.
He said other activities held previously included a visit to an estate to
provide medical advice and checks.
