NEW YORK: Tommy Morrison, the US fighter suspended in 1996 after testing
positive for the HIV virus, will end his 11-year ring layoff today after
obtaining medical clearance to fight, ESPN reported on Tuesday.
The 38-year-old heavyweight will return to the ring today in Chester, West
Virginia, in a four-round bout against fellow American John Castle.
Morrison, 46-3 with one drawn and 40 knockouts, has been training in Arizona
for the past few months. He has maintained that his positive test for the
virus which causes AIDS was a false positive.
“It has been a long time coming,” Morrison told ESPN.
“I know I didn't have (HIV) in the first place.
“I never had it... but they kicked me out of the sport.
“Over the last two or three months, I have taken five, six different (HIV)
tests and continued to pass them. It was just a matter of time before they
had to let me fight again.”
Morrison fought once after his HIV positive, knocking out Marcus Rhode in
Japan in November of 1996.
The biggest moment of Morrison's career came in June of 1993 when he won a
decision over George Foreman to take the vacant World Boxing Organisation
heavyweight crown. – AFP
