TAIPEI: An HIV-positive drug addict in Taiwan was charged with attempted
murder for biting a policeman while resisting arrest, local media reported
on Thursday.
According to cable TV channel TVBS, the 33-year-old drug addict, identified
only as Chen, learned in 2005 he had been infected with HIV through sharing
needles.
The biting incident took place on April 28 last year, when police in
Kaohsiung caught Chen attempting to sell illicit drugs. In an attempt to
escape arrest, Chen bit Police Officer Chou Cheng's left forearm, causing it
to bleed.
The arresting officer Chou has since taken several blood tests which so far
have turned out negative for the virus that causes AIDS.
“Chen was aware he had HIV and knew that AIDS is still an incurable disease.
So we assume he intended to kill the policeman by biting him and infecting
him with HIV,” Prosecutor Chung Chung-hsiao said.
If convicted, Chen could face a maximum sentence of life in prison. — dpa
